Student Use of Internet-Enabled Devices

The Emerson Board of Education recently reviewed and approved updates to Policy and Regulation 5516 – Student Use of Internet-Enabled Devices to align with new New Jersey legislation.

On January 8, 2026, Governor Phil Murphy signed P.L. 2025, c.195 (N.J.S.A. 18A:36-40b), which requires all New Jersey public school districts to prohibit student use of internet-enabled devices during the school day. The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) has also published guidance and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to assist school districts and families with understanding the new law.

For Emerson Public Schools, this policy update does not result in any changes to our current practices. Our district has maintained expectations regarding the use of cell phones and other personal internet-enabled devices during the school day for many years. These longstanding procedures have helped foster focused classrooms, minimize distractions, and promote meaningful student engagement.

We appreciate our families' continued partnership in supporting a learning environment where students can remain engaged with their teachers, classmates, and instructional activities. Additional information regarding the law, NJDOE guidance, and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) is available on the NJDOE website.
